White Plains Mayoral candidates, Thomas Roach, Bob Hyland and Glen Hockley will take part in a TV-style debate cosponsored by the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations and the White Plains Concerned Citizens for Open Space on March 23 at the Ridgeway School.

Thomas Roach, White Plains Acting Mayor and President of the Common Council, Bob Hyland, White Plains businessman and former NFL superstar, and Glen Hockley, a real estate salesman and former Common Council member will participate in a Mayoral debate on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 7:30 pm in the Ridgeway School auditorium. Admission is free and audience participation is encouraged.

The White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) and the White Plains Concerned Citizens for Open Space (WPCCOS) are cosponsoring the debate which will use a TV style format with timed answers and rebuttals to questions submitted in advance by WPCNA and WPCCOS members. Pat Casey of the White Plains Times will moderate, and the debate will be video-taped for later broadcast on White Plains Public Access Channels 45 and 76.

Mr. Roach, who has the endorsement of the Democratic, Working Families and Independence parties, is a trial lawyer, first elected to the Common Council in 2001, where he serves on the Recreation Advisory, Personnel and Green Technology Committees. He says protecting the environment and making government open and efficient are some of his key issues.

Mr. Hyland, a registered Independence Party member, has been endorsed by the Republican and Conservative parties.  A football celebrity who played in the NFL for 11 years, he is the owner of the Sports Page Pub in White Plains and an agent for MassMutual Life Insurance.  He says he’s an outsider who understands the tax payer, small business owner, and business in general.

Mr. Hockley, who ran against Adam Bradley for mayor in 2009, will run as the candidate of his own People Over Politics Party.  Currently on staff at Houlihan Lawrence in White Plains, he served on the Budget & Management, Open Space Acquisition, and Capital Projects Committees as a Councilman.  He says he will reduce taxes, preserve the integrity of the neighborhoods, and make City Hall efficient.

The Mayoral Debate is sure to draw a capacity crowd.  Come early to get a good seat!  The meeting will get underway promptly at 7:30 pm to allow time for audience participation.

White Plains Times Publisher Pat Casey will explore "21st Century Publishing," and Journal News City Reporter Ben Rubin will talk about "Reporting White Plains Digitally" at the November meeting of the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations.

The November monthly meeting of the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) will explore "Journalism in the Digital Age." It will be held at Education House at 5 Homeside Lane in White Plains, NY at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, November 9, 2010. The Guest Speakers will be White Plains Times Editor and Publisher Pat Casey who will discuss "21st Century Publishing" and Benjamin Rubin, City Reporter for the The Journal News who will talk about "Reporting White Plains Digitally." John Vorperian, White Plains public access producer and host will set the stage with a brief talk on "Community Access Television — What’s the Next Step?" Admission is free and the public is invited to attend and participate.

Pat Casey joined the White Plains Watch as editor of the "Living Section" in May 2004, bringing over 20 years of publishing experience, most recently as editor and publisher of several communications publications, including a trade publication that followed the development of digital technology. She took over as Publisher and Owner of the Watch in October 2005, expanding its coverage and changing its name at year end to the now familiar White Plains Times.

Mr. Rubin is a cum laude graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where he majored in nonfiction and political science writing. He got started in professional journalism at the Pittsburgh City Paper and Pittsburgh Magazine, and worked at the North Adams Transcript and Journal Inquirer (East Hartford), before joining the Journal News, where he now covers City Hall and the Schools in White Plains.

The White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations will sponsor a Forum on The Future of the Ridgeway Country Club at its October meeting.  The keynote speaker will be Tom Anderson, Deputy Director of the Westchester Land Trust.

With membership declining, the Ridgeway Country Club was first offered for sale last year at $20 million, and failing that, last week at $13.5 million. In its October meeting, the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) will feature local leaders exploring the history, ecology, uses and value of the 128.6 acre Ridgeway Country Club.  The meeting is at the Ridgeway School cafeteria, 225 Ridgeway in White Plains, NY at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. Admission is free and audience participation is encouraged.

Spun off from the 1912 Gedney Farm Hotel, the Ridgeway Country Club has long been known for golf, tennis and fine dining.  But today, with debt rising, the Club wants a quick sale to end the pain. Developers see an opportunity for upscale housing — the property is zoned R1-30, One Family District.  Environmentalists point to many acres of sensitive wetland.  Open space advocates hope, at minimum, for continued operation as a country club.  The City may buy and develop it for recreational use while protecting and preserving the space.

In addition to Tom Anderson, who writes and lectures on Long Island Sound issues, the Forum will include architect and White Plains Common Council Member Milagros Lecuona, prominent Realtor and former Planning Commissioner Michael Graessle, environmentalist Robert Stackpole, White Plains Historical Society President Robert Hoch, EcoNeighbors: Carry Kyzivat and Yvonne Gumowitz, and White Plains Concerned Citizens for Open Space President Frances Jones, who will moderate the discussion.
