Fast-Growing DAIM Logistics Launches New Website

DAIM Logistics, the Fultonville, NY interstate trucking, warehousing and logistics company, launches a new website to celebrate its tenth year of robust growth.

Chris and Pat Oare started DAIM Logistics in Johnstown, NY in 2001.  The Oare brothers, rooted in agricultural sustainability and military organization, bucked the economy and grew the business, focusing on superior logistics to support the nationwide distribution of dry van and flatbed loads.

By 2009 DAIM was ready to move into a custom 25,000 sq ft facility built on 8 acres in Glen Canal View Business Park in Fultonville, NY.  The new facility had room for offices, operations, warehouse and a growing fleet of 15 tractors and 40 trailers of various types. Serving primarily manufacturers and chain store distributors, DAIM was shipping coast-to-coast in the lower 48 states.

To celebrate its 10th year in business, DAIM commissioned a new website to tell the DAIM story.  The new website, available in desktop and mobile versions, like the new facility is clean, modern and designed to do business.

Hot Rod Reunion: 50th Anniversary of Tri-Cities Drag-Way Races

A 50th Anniversary Reunion of the Tri-Cities (Endicott, Johnson City, Binghamton) Drag-Way races will be held on June 10 and 11, 2011.  Bob Connelly, who promoted the NHRA-sanctioned hot rod races in the 60′s and early 70′s, is organizing the Reunion as a nostalgic, family oriented celebration to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Western Broome and the Binghamton Boys & Girls Club.

Festivities get underway on Friday evening, June 10, with a free Parade of Cars and Cruise-In, and a sock hop and Concert. Starting at 6:00 pm, vintage, classic and drag-racing cars and motorcycles will parade from the Boys & Girls Club of Western Broome at One Clubhouse Road in Endicott to Binghamton Plaza, 33 W State Street, Binghamton for a Cruise-In. From 7:00-10:00 pm at the Binghamton Plaza Showplace, Bill Grace will emcee a concert featuring The Rip Chords — famous for their smash hit “Hey Little Cobra” — and The Bruce Beadle Band. Admission is $10 and refreshments will be available.

The first-ever Reunion takes place on Saturday, June 11 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, at the Tri-Cities Airport in Endicott, NY, site of the original Tri-Cities Drag-Way races. There will be no races at the Reunion — and no alcohol — but look for a giant show of cars, with their owners competing for trophies and plaques, while four Drag-Way greats are inducted into the Tri-Cities Drag-Way Hall of Fame. The Reunion will also feature a Swap Meet and Flea Market.  Admission is $5 per person and $5 per show car; the vendor fee is $25 per flea market booth. The Boys & Girls Clubs will provide entertainment and sell a variety of portable food, including a Pig Stand® type pulled pork sandwich.

The Tri-Cities Drag-Way Reunion is sponsored by America’s Attic, Cook’s Septic Service, Cool 100 FM 100.5, Don’s Automotive Mall, Gary’s U-Pull It/United Auto Parts/Scrap Everything, Staples, Tioga Downs Casino and Wilcox’s Towing & Automotive Repairs.

All proceeds from the Concert and Reunion will go the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broome County. For more information or to volunteer, call sponsoring coordinator Bob Connelly at 607-722-3544 or email Drags@BobConnelly.com.

Time Traveler 1776: A Hands-On Revolutionary War Program for Schools, Groups

A new website, Time Traveler 1776, publicizes a unique historical program that makes the American Revolution come alive for school and community audiences.

Time Traveler LLC, the Herndon, VA historical consulting firm, has launched a website to showcase its program of hands-on Revolutionary War presentations created by founder Thomas A. Kuehhas for students, seniors, Veterans, and other community groups. The presentations, designed for classroom and meeting room audiences, feature museum-quality reproductions of the uniforms and equipment used by George Washington’s soldiers. Touching the military artifacts and trying on the uniforms creates immediacy; Tom’s probing questions and enthusiasm bring the experience to life.

Mr. Kuehhas is an accomplished Museum Director whom colleagues describe as a hands-on historian, fascinated by history and challenged to interpret it personally one class, one group, and one person at a time. He has published articles, been featured on A & E Network documentaries, and curated museum exhibitions — all on the Revolutionary War and Colonial times. Tom says "When I moved to Virginia, I decided to build a business around my interest in Revolutionary War history — ideal for Virginia! — and my aptitude for personal interpretation." The Time Traveler 1776 program for schools and other groups was the natural outcome.

Response to the program from students — "This stuff was so awesome!" — teachers, and general audiences has been strong and positive. Danielle Stockton of Washington Episcopal School in Bethesda, MD wrote: "Thomas Kuehhas’s Revolutionary War program was a terrific complement to our 4th grade social studies curriculum.  Students were able to experience history in an interactive way and learned a great deal ….  They would have loved to spend a whole day with Mr. Kuehhas!"

To learn more about the Time Traveler 1776 and Mr. Kuehhas and to schedule a program for your group or class, please visit the website at http://www.timetraveler1776.com or contact Tom directly during business hours at 703-435-1116 or 516-662-0033 or email him any time.

Roach, Hyland, Hockley Debate at WPCNA

White Plains Mayoral candidates, Thomas Roach, Bob Hyland and Glen Hockley will take part in a TV-style debate cosponsored by the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations and the White Plains Concerned Citizens for Open Space on March 23 at the Ridgeway School.

Thomas Roach, White Plains Acting Mayor and President of the Common Council, Bob Hyland, White Plains businessman and former NFL superstar, and Glen Hockley, a real estate salesman and former Common Council member will participate in a Mayoral debate on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 7:30 pm in the Ridgeway School auditorium. Admission is free and audience participation is encouraged.

The White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) and the White Plains Concerned Citizens for Open Space (WPCCOS) are cosponsoring the debate which will use a TV style format with timed answers and rebuttals to questions submitted in advance by WPCNA and WPCCOS members. Pat Casey of the White Plains Times will moderate, and the debate will be video-taped for later broadcast on White Plains Public Access Channels 45 and 76.

Mr. Roach, who has the endorsement of the Democratic, Working Families and Independence parties, is a trial lawyer, first elected to the Common Council in 2001, where he serves on the Recreation Advisory, Personnel and Green Technology Committees. He says protecting the environment and making government open and efficient are some of his key issues.

Mr. Hyland, a registered Independence Party member, has been endorsed by the Republican and Conservative parties.  A football celebrity who played in the NFL for 11 years, he is the owner of the Sports Page Pub in White Plains and an agent for MassMutual Life Insurance.  He says he’s an outsider who understands the tax payer, small business owner, and business in general.

Mr. Hockley, who ran against Adam Bradley for mayor in 2009, will run as the candidate of his own People Over Politics Party.  Currently on staff at Houlihan Lawrence in White Plains, he served on the Budget & Management, Open Space Acquisition, and Capital Projects Committees as a Councilman.  He says he will reduce taxes, preserve the integrity of the neighborhoods, and make City Hall efficient.

Hudson Valley Charter School An Unneeded Expense

As someone committed to quality education, I was interested to learn that a new charter school — the proposed Hudson Valley Charter School for the Arts and Global Awareness — might be coming to the White Plains area.

Charter schools, which are not subject to the same rules and regulations as public schools, can develop unique means and teaching methods.  Like home schooling, military academies, private and parochial schools, they sometimes perform better than nearby public schools, although not nearly as well as the provocative film Waiting for "Superman" suggests.  In a nationwide study of 2500 charter schools by Stanford economist Margaret Raymond — the CREDO study — 17% were judged superior to matched public schools, 46% the same, and 37% worse, leaving plenty of room for improvement.

However, in economically depressed localities which are under- or badly-served by their public schools, charter schools can provide much-needed, affordable alternative schooling.  The compelling benefit is that charter schools, unlike the alternatives, are tuition-free.  In New York state, the tuition, transportation and other expenses are paid by the local school system, whether the charter school is structured as a non-profit or for-profit institution.

It is impossible to know beforehand whether the proposed Hudson Valley Charter School for the Arts and Global Awareness will be one of the 17% that might be superior, or part of the overwhelming majority which, at best, are no better than the White Plains Schools. But we do know that White Plains does not fit the economically depressed profile of benefit.  And more importantly, we know that White Plains excels in teaching the arts and global awareness, the express specialties of the proposed charter school.

With no need, and no reason to expect it to exceed, the proposed charter school evokes just one certainty.  If it succeeds in attracting 10-15 of our students, it will cost the White Plains Schools system $260,000-390,000 it can ill-afford.

That’s what I think.  Please express your opinion at the public hearing on Wednesday, October 27, 2010, 7:30 pm, in the Assembly Room at Education House, 5 Homeside Lane, White Plains, New York.  And let the members of the School Board know in writing.  You’ll find their names, home and email addresses here: http://tinyurl.com/WPSchoolBoard.

WPCNA Hosts Forum on the Ridgeway Country Club’s Fate

The White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations will sponsor a Forum on The Future of the Ridgeway Country Club at its October meeting.  The keynote speaker will be Tom Anderson, Deputy Director of the Westchester Land Trust.

With membership declining, the Ridgeway Country Club was first offered for sale last year at $20 million, and failing that, last week at $13.5 million. In its October meeting, the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) will feature local leaders exploring the history, ecology, uses and value of the 128.6 acre Ridgeway Country Club.  The meeting is at the Ridgeway School cafeteria, 225 Ridgeway in White Plains, NY at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. Admission is free and audience participation is encouraged.

Spun off from the 1912 Gedney Farm Hotel, the Ridgeway Country Club has long been known for golf, tennis and fine dining.  But today, with debt rising, the Club wants a quick sale to end the pain. Developers see an opportunity for upscale housing — the property is zoned R1-30, One Family District.  Environmentalists point to many acres of sensitive wetland.  Open space advocates hope, at minimum, for continued operation as a country club.  The City may buy and develop it for recreational use while protecting and preserving the space.

In addition to Tom Anderson, who writes and lectures on Long Island Sound issues, the Forum will include architect and White Plains Common Council Member Milagros Lecuona, prominent Realtor and former Planning Commissioner Michael Graessle, environmentalist Robert Stackpole, White Plains Historical Society President Robert Hoch, EcoNeighbors: Carry Kyzivat and Yvonne Gumowitz, and White Plains Concerned Citizens for Open Space President Frances Jones, who will moderate the discussion.

Interest in this unique Forum is running high, so please come early to get a good seat.
